"Accounting for almost two thirds of the country's land-mass, Northern Canada is a vast region, host to rich natural resources and a diverse cultural heritage shared across Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents. In this book, Rebecca Schiff and Helle Møller analyse health and healthcare in Northern Canada from a perspective that acknowledges the unique strengths, resilience, and innovation of northerners, while also addressing the challenges aggravated by contemporary manifestations of colonialism. Old and new forms of colonial programs and policies continue to create health and healthcare disparities in the North, which has had a profound impact on northerners. Divided into three sections, Health and Healthcare in Northern Canada paints a broad picture of primary issues that northern peoples face. Several chapters are written by northerners and utilize case studies, quotes, photographs, and other materials to highlight voices and perspectives of people living in northern Canada. To examine opportunities to improve health equity across the cancer care continuum, the National Cancer Policy Forum and the Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity hosted a public workshop, Promoting Health Equity in Cancer Care, on October 25 and October 26, 2021.
This virtual workshop featured presentations and panel discussions on topics that included: opportunities to improve equitable access to affordable, high-quality cancer care; strategies to identify and address the intersectionality of structural racism and implicit bias in cancer care delivery; the potential for quality measurement and payment mechanisms to incentivize health equity in cancer care delivery; and clinical practice data collection efforts to better assess and care for people living with and beyond cancer. "With cancer ranking as the primary or secondary cause of premature death in almost 100 countries worldwide, the World Health Organization recognized a high level of investment in cancer control and treatment (including palliative care) in 2019. At that time, governments at the World Health Assembly (WHA) unanimously adopted a new cancer resolution (Universal Health Coverage: Moving Together to Build a Healthier World). The resolution noted the potential for cancer prevention to reduce cancer burden in the future, while reducing the suffering from cancer in the communities.As most countries are facing an overall increase in the absolute number of cancer cases, large geographical diversity in cancer occurrence and variations in the magnitude and profile of the disease still continue between and within world regions.
