"Accounting for almost two thirds of the country's land-mass, Northern Canada is a vast region, host to rich natural resources and a diverse cultural heritage shared across Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents. In this book, Rebecca Schiff and Helle Møller analyse health and healthcare in Northern Canada from a perspective that acknowledges the unique strengths, resilience, and innovation of northerners, while also addressing the challenges aggravated by contemporary manifestations of colonialism. Old and new forms of colonial programs and policies continue to create health and healthcare disparities in the North, which has had a profound impact on northerners. Divided into three sections, Health and Healthcare in Northern Canada paints a broad picture of primary issues that northern peoples face. "[This book] examines an Indigenous life and death in a Canadian city and what it reveals about the ongoing history of colonialism. In September 2008, Brian Sinclair, a middle-aged, non-Status Anishinaabe resident of Winnipeg, arrived in the emergency room of a major downtown hospital. Over a thirty-four- hour period, he was left untreated and unattended to, and ultimately died from an easily treatable infection. McCallum and Perry present the ways in which Sinclair, once erased and ignored, came to represent diffuse, yet singular and largely dehumanized ideas about Indigenous people, modernity, and decline in cities. This story tells us about ordinary indigeneity in the city of Winnipeg through Sinclair?s experience and restores the complex humanity denied him in his interactions with Canadian health and legal systems, both before and after his death." - Provided by publisher.

This report presents findings from an environmental scan that was conducted as part of a larger Survivorship Project by the Rebalance Focus Action Group of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer. The Survivorship Project aims to move a national cancer survivorship agenda in Canada forward in the coming years. The scan consisted of both a literature search as well as individual interviews with 47 key informants with a threefold purpose to:

(1) Explore the nature of and extent to which cancer survivorship conceptualization, research and practice is undertaken in Canada

(2) Identify some of the key Canadian contributors to cancer survivorship undertakings

(3) Identify resources from the literature that may prove useful in future cancer survivorship efforts in Canada

"Improved cancer treatment and survival rates have resulted in a growing number of cancer survivors who live years, and even decades, after their cancer diagnosis. Insights into what the experience of cancer survivorship looks like and how it can be navigated are much sought after by cancer survivors and their families, loved ones, and communities as they chart this unfamiliar and often lonely territory.
